THE TOP SIGNS THAT YOUR CHILD MAY HAVE AUTISM - SOME REALLY SURPRISED US!

Somebody once said – “To give birth to a healthy child is one of our duties to mankind”!

It is very surprising that this was actually mentioned as a duty of every human being who brings progeny to the Earth.

How easy is this? How difficult is this, is debatable!

With the huge changes in lifestyle and harmful habits being adopted hunky-dory, the task of conceiving a healthy baby, and consciously carrying it forward, taking all the precautions, to ensure delivering a healthy baby – is a marathon task that lasts for more than 10 months!

It is a penance. It starts when a couple thinks of conceiving. Yes! right from the though itself. It requires the mother-to-be, to follow a list of do’s and don’ts to prepare one’s body and mind, to conceive a healthy baby. The same applies to the father-to-be as well.

Once this journey starts…it goes on till the baby is delivered. For the mother who breastfeeds her baby, it continues till the baby stops weaning.

Why is all this a wonderful but, strenuous process? This is a question every common man will ask. Yes there are millions of us, who are unaware that developmental disorders in the foetus can be caused by just one crazy act.

The impact is a lifetime of suffering, an abnormal life, and a hurt ego.

Let us delve into Autism – a neuro-developmental disorder associated with the neurology of the infant, caused in the womb itself.

Autism is four times more common in boys than in girls.

With the birth of a child, every parent harbours so much expectation – very simple ones to start with.

Right from the first cry of the baby, excitement peaks up.

Everything the baby does will be a thing of beauty.

The activities that will bring immense joy to the parents are when your baby or toddler

  • Makes its first eye  contact with you - such as looking at you when being fed or smiling when being smiled at
  • Responds to his or her name
  • Responds to the sound of a familiar voice
  • Follows objects visually
  • Follows gestures
  • Points out to objects
  • Points out to people
  • Waves goodbye
  • Uses other gestures to communicate
  • Makes noises to draw attention
  • Initiate or respond to cuddling
  • Reach out to be picked up
  • Imitate movements and facial expressions
  • Play with other people or share interest and enjoyment
  • Notice or care if you hurt yourself or experience discomfort

These small actions that are a source of immense joy are all monitored as developmental milestones.

The developmental milestones to be watched out for are:

By 6 months: Big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions

By 9 months: Back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles, or other facial expressions

By 12 months: Response to name

By 12 months: Babbling or “baby talk”

By 12 months: Pro-active gestures, like pointing out, showing things, reaching out, or waving hands

By 16 months: Spoken words

By 24 months: Meaningful two-word phrases that don’t involve imitating or repeating

Achieving the developmental milestones is important, but it does not mean that you child is autistic if there is slight delay. Keep a watch, be alert.

Symptoms of an AUTISTIC child – a special child as they call it are:

The spectrum of symptoms includes:

Behavioural

  • inappropriate social interaction

Developmental

  • delay of the onset of speech in a child

Muscular

  • poor coordination
  • problem in paying attention
  • intense interest in a limited number of things
