INFECTIVE ARTHRITIS

Infective Arthritis is otherwise known as purulent or septic arthritis. It is a condition characterized by infection of the joint by microorganisms leading to arthritis. This is a condition which is most commonly seen in people having artificial or prosthetic joints. It has to be treated as an emergency as it may lead to permanent joint pain (or) damage or systemic bacterial infection if left untreated.

Causes Of Infective Arthritis (or) Septic Arthritis

For infective arthritis to happen the microorganism has to reach the synovial membrane (the soft inner covering of the joint) either through blood or through the adjacent tissues.

It can take place by

• Dissemination of infection through the blood
• Dissemination of infection through an osteomylitic focus (Osteomyelitis is a condition where there is infection of bones)
• Trough adjacent soft tissue
• Through direct penetrating injuries
• Or induced due to infection acquired during surgery.

Symptoms Of Infective Arthritis (OR) Septic Arthritis

• The main symptom is pain, Pain will be felt with any type of movement of the affected joint
• There will be fever and local raise in temperature
• There will also be swelling and redness of affected joint.

Ayurvedic treatment for Septic Arthritis (or) Infective arthritis is limited to treating cases not responding to modern medicine. The first line of treatment to be considered for any patient with Infective arthritis is the administration of the appropriate anti-biotic. However in some cases the infection persists despite intense anti-biotic usage. In these cases Ayurvedic treatment can be helpful to improve the natural immunity of the patient which helps to get over infections that do not respond to anti-biotics.

Ayurvedic treatment for Infective arthritis mainly comprises of herbal medicines for internal consumption, that help improve immunity and some supportive external therapies like Kwatha seka (pouring herbal decoctions over the affected part) or Lepa (applying herbal pastes). If the patient’s general health is good, detoxification through Panchakarma (the bio-purification therapies of Ayurveda) is also recommended.
