There is a nerve called the Median nerve which originates from the spinal cord, runs through the hands and terminates at the fingers. This median nerve controls the sensation and movement of the first three fingers of our arm. The Carpal Tunnel or the Carpel Canal is a structure a (gap between the bones) located at the wrists, through which the Median Nerve enters the hands. The gap through which the nerve passes is surrounded by bones and ligaments. When these tissues get inflamed, or if the gap is reduced due to some mechanical defects, it results in compression to the Median Nerve and leads to a condition known as Carpel Tunnel Syndrome.
In most cases tracing out the exact cause of this condition is difficult. It is commonly associated with medical conditions like Obesity, Use of contraceptive pills, Hypothyroidism (decreased production of thyroid hormones), Arthritis, Diabetes, Trauma or injury to the wrist, Repetitive flexion of the wrists and jobs involving carrying heavy loads, direct and heavy vibrations to the arm, etc. are also responsible for inducing this condition. People working with the computer for long hours, and placing their hands in an improper position while typing with the keyboard also develop this condition.
Treatment of Carpel tunnel Syndrome is aimed at relieving the compression to the median nerve and reversing the inflammatory process to provide relief of symptoms and restore functionality.
Treatment For Carpel Tunnel Syndrome in Contemporary Medicine (Allopathy)
Initially, patients are advised to undergo physiotherapy. Patients are also advised to use splints in the wrist joint so as to minimize further compression. Later, medication in the form of NSAIDs are used. Even after this if there is no pain relief – Local Injection or oral consumption of steroids is advised. If all these procedures fail to provide adequate relief, surgery is the last resort. Surgery is done to improve the gap and release the compression to the nerve.
